BiteWise Privacy Policy
Overview
This policy explains what information BiteWise collects, how it's used, and your choices. BiteWise is developed by ChimiDevelopment (“we”, “us”).
Google Sign-In
You can use BiteWise without an account, in which case everything stays on your device. If you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address, and a Google account identifier to create and manage your BiteWise account; we never receive your Google password.
Your Data & Cloud Sync
When you're signed in, the app stores your data in your account on Supabase, our database provider, so it syncs across your devices: what you log, your weight history, favorites, your profile and goals (such as age, sex, height, weight, and activity level), and preferences like remembered portions and search picks. It is sent over encrypted connections and only your account can read it. Without an account, this data stays on your device. Reminders are scheduled on your device and nothing about them is sent to us. We don't sell your data.
Health Data
With your permission, BiteWise reads your weight, height, steps, and calories burned from Apple Health or Health Connect. It never writes to either. Weights read from Health are saved to your weight history (and synced to your account if you're signed in); steps and calories burned stay on your device. Health data is never sold, shared with advertisers, or used for advertising.
Photo Scans & AI Processing
When you scan a meal or a nutrition label, the photo you take or pick from your library is sent through our server to Google's Gemini API to estimate the food and its nutrition. Photos are processed only to answer that request and are not stored by us. To enforce the daily scan limit we keep a record of each scan (your account ID, the date, and whether it succeeded). On Android, each scan also includes a Google Play Integrity check, which confirms the request comes from a genuine copy of the app.
Shared Food Database & Food Data Sources
Food searches are sent to USDA FoodData Central, Open Food Facts, and Edamam to find matching foods. When you log a food found online, or a barcode or photo scan, its name and nutrition facts may be added to a shared community food database (hosted on Supabase) that other users can search. Each entry records the account that added it so only that person can edit it; your other data is never attached to it. If you suggest a correction to a food, the suggestion is stored with your account ID for review.
Advertising
BiteWise offers optional rewarded ads from Google AdMob, which you can watch to earn extra scans. Ads are only loaded when you choose to watch one, and we request non-personalized ads. AdMob may collect your device's advertising ID, approximate location derived from your IP address, and ad interaction and diagnostic data to serve ads, measure them, and prevent fraud. Deleting Your Account
To delete your account and its data, open the app, go to Profile, and tap Delete Account. This immediately and permanently deletes your account along with everything stored for it: logged meals, weight history, favorites, profile, preferences, scan records, and ad rewards. Foods you added to the shared community database stay available to others, but are no longer linked to you. Signing out also clears your data from that device. If you can't access the app, email chimidevelopment@gmail.com from your account's email address and we'll delete it for you within 30 days.
Children's Privacy
BiteWise is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
Your Rights
You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of your data by contacting us below. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under laws such as the GDPR or CCPA.
